Merthyr Vale Weir Removal
Why are we removing the weir?
An important part of our work is to improve the water quality and the ecology of the rivers in Wales for people and wildlife.
The weir at Merthyr Vale is a barrier to fish that migrate up the River Taff to spawn and produce juvenile fish, which helps boost stocks.
We will demolish the weir and remove the obstruction, which will also improve angling opportunities by enhancing the quality and availability of fish in the river.
Over the last 15 years, we and our partners have invested millions of pounds to improve river habitats so they can support greater populations of native fish such as salmon, trout, eels and bullheads and improve the Ecological Status of the Taff under the Water Framework Directive.
The weir is the last remaining significant barrier and last impediment to realising the benefits of the work completed to date.
When is this happening?
Work will begin on 29 May 2018 and will take about 12 weeks to complete.
During construction some of the riverside paths near the site will be closed. We apologies for any inconvenience during this time.
We’ll do everything we can to minimise disruption to the local community while we undertake these improvements, and we appreciate your co-operation and patience.
Flood risk benefit
The additional benefit of the weir removal will be to reduce flood risk within the local area whilst ensuring flood risk is not increased elsewhere as a result.
