Technical Species Permitting Support

As an organisation we support flexible working. This role allows hybrid working (a mix of home and office working) and a working pattern suitable for you can be discussed on appointment if you are successful.

You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home, of which you will be required to attend for regular meetings, training and for one-to-one meetings with your manager. These will be planned in advance.

Job Description

This is an opportunity to join a busy team who deal with a range of wildlife permits related to European and UK protected species as well as Invasive non-native species.  This is a customer facing role dealing with the general public, industry and ecological consultants.  The role support the Permitting Service with the delivery of high level administrative duties associated with the permitting process and other supporting activities. The role it is desk based and requires attention to detail, good computer skills and the ability to manage high volumes of work to set deadlines, experience of invoicing would also be an advantage. If you have an interest in wildlife, have customer relations experience, good Information Technology skills and enjoy working as part of a team dealing with complex applications, we would welcome your interest.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities include:

  • Planning workloads to ensure that the logging and processing of species licences are completed within deadlines.
  • Support applicants with application advice for various sites and species.
  • Identify opportunities for changes to process and guidance needed to deliver efficient and effective permitting service and assist on co-ordinating the change as required.
  • Undertake simple permitting activities including, but not limited to, processing administrative amendment requests, transfers and withdrawals of applications.
  • Develop and maintain effective customer relationships to ensure good understanding and the efficient delivery of the permitting process.
  • Ensure that all relevant documentation is stored appropriately within the organisational document management systems.

Qualifications, Experience & Knowledge

Knowledge and experience of the following:

  1. Ability to work within a team, the ability to establish and maintain networks, and the ability to communicate clearly, confidently and persuasively, both orally and in writing.
  2. Excellent organisational and administration skills and the ability to meet targets and work to deadlines.
  3. The ability to use word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail, NRW intranet and internet in a Windows environment.
  4. Strong customer focussed approach to delivery.
  5. A basic knowledge of UK and European legislation relating to protected species and species ecology. (Desirable)

Welsh Language Requirements:

Essential Level 1 – Able to pronounce Welsh and use basic phrases

Essential Knowledge and Skills

  • The post holder will experience, knowledge and skills from working in previous organisations, with a good grasp and understanding of administrative and organisational principles, procedures and policy.
  • The role will require good numeracy, literacy, IT and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • The post holder will have a high level of understanding of NRW. They will have some specific technical knowledge of the work, developed in previous environments, which will be enhanced and developed through the  role.
  • The post holdder will have excellent knowledge of business systems that support their area, including national databases.

Evaluation of Information

  • The post holder will deal with day to day documentation, emails, correspondence, schedules, recording events, etc, seeking or giving information. Non complex information will be gathered from multipe sources, without the need for any detailed research.
  • The post holder will beabaleto use business systems and national databases, and able to use and manipulative such systems in order to provide information that others will use.

Decision Making and Autonomy Requirements

  • Post holders will make decisions from established alternatives or through prior knowledge, known outcomes and solutions.
  • Post holders will be able to work independently, organise and deliver their own work plan in line with agreed parameters and guidance, whilst adhering to policies and procedures.
  • The post holder will be guided by clearly defined objectives. Work will be routine in nature, with some initiative required.

Impact

  • The impact of the post holder's work will be within their own area of work or immediate team or function. Their input and effectiveness will support the delivery of other activities.
  • The impact of decisions or activity will be moderate, with some aspects of work, if carried out incorrectly, could impact on third parties and a wider area. The impact would be known immediately, rectified and addressed quickly without any longer term issues.

Communication and Relationships with Others

  • The post holder will have good communication skills with the ability to adapt style and content. Relationships will be with internal and external parties.
  • Communication will include giving and sharing information, dealing with standard work related queries.
